The Birch Creek Project is pioneering a model of rewilding that integrates horse rescue with ecosystem restoration. By giving discarded mustangs a new life in wild, ecologically appropriate landscapes, we restore natural processes of large herbivores in the Yellowstone to Central Idaho wilderness corridor. If we are able to manage horse herds in a way that will promote ecosystem health, we could create a model for horse management across the American west.
