Housten Twitchell
Equine & Ranch Manager, Mandalai Ranch

Ranch manager and oversees all aspects of ranch operations. Housten grew up in the area ranching and rodeoing, developing a deep appreciation for the land, livestock, and western way of life With a strong background in horse care, he is responsible for the health, training, and daily care of the horses we own. He also manages all ranch-related projects, coordinating improvements and maintenance to keep the facilities and land safe, efficient, and well maintained. Outside of work, Housten enjoys trail riding, fishing, and spending time outdoors with family and friends.

Laura Knoerr
Rangeland & Wildlife Ecologist, Mandalai Ranch

Staff biologist specializing in field-based ecological monitoring. Laura’s work focuses on using data collection such as vegetation surveys, breeding bird surveys, and camera trap monitoring to establish long-term programs that assess ecosystem health and guide adaptive land management. She holds a Bachelor of Science in Wildlife and Range Management, with a special interest in how horses shape habitats, influence plant communities, and interact with wildlife to promote resilient ecosystems. Outside of work, Laura enjoys kayaking, hiking, camping, and spending time outdoors with Eska.

Erick Lundgren
Head of Science & Research

Erick Lundgren is an ecologist who uses a variety of quantitative macroecological and field based approaches to study introduced species and novel ecosystems. Erick is interested in studying these phenomena in the context of Earth's history and with an eye to the influence of cultural values on how we interpret biotic change.

Manda Kalimian
Owner & Founder

Manda Kalimian is the President of Rewilding America Now, which for over a decade has worked to rewild America’s wild horses and restore land to promote environmental and climate sustainability.

She is also the founder of the Birch Creek Dialogues, which aims to elevate civic discourse through the power of nature—bringing diverse voices together in the landscape to foster thoughtful dialogue, conservation awareness, and shared stewardship. Through this work, Manda has raised national awareness about America’s urgent need for conservation and the vital role nature plays in human flourishing.
Manda owns over 1,300 private acres and 70,000 federal grazing acres in Birch Creek Valley, Idaho, and is focused on ensuring its preservation as part of the critical Yellowstone wildlife corridor.

Manda is a staunch believer in traditional ecological knowledge and a founding member of the Institute of Politics and Global Affairs at Cornell University. She helped create and fund the first rewilding policy curriculum at the Cornell Brooks School of Public Policy and spearheaded the inclusion of rewilding language for managing America’s wild horses in the FY2020 Interior Appropriations budget bill. She continues to partner with government entities on conservation initiatives and policy development.

She is the author of Born to Rewild: Triumphs of a Now Fearless Woman. In 2019 and 2025, she presented at the Conservation Forum at University of Cambridge. She also helped secure a scientific grant to fund research at McMaster University’s Poinar Lab on Quaternary ecosystems using environmental DNA drawn from sediment cores (sedaDNA), with a primary goal of collecting additional evidence regarding the last appearance times for horses in North America.

Brian May is a fourth-generation rancher whose roots run deep in the community. Raised in a family that has worked the land for generations, Brian brings a deep understanding of ranching, land stewardship, and the careful balance required to sustain both the land and the people who depend on it.

As an advisor to the Birch Creek Project, Brian contributes practical insight shaped by decades of hands-on experience in agriculture. He believes strongly in the importance of community and collaboration, and is committed to supporting initiatives that honor agricultural heritage while bringing people together to ensure the long-term health of the land and the communities it sustains.

Michael Nathanson
Strategic Advisor

Michael Nathanson is a senior executive with over four decades of experience in the motion picture and entertainment industry.

As a leader in the entertainment industry, Michael has overseen and participated in every facet of the industry, from operational and production aspects to development, marketing, and distribution, often handling annual budgets of one billion dollars. He has served as Chairman or President of three major motion picture companies and studios, including MGM Studios, Columbia Pictures, and New Regency. Michael has produced numerous acclaimed films, including the Academy Award-winning "LA CONFIDENTIAL" and the Academy Award-nominated "HELL OR HIGH WATER." Notably, he played a pivotal role in the rejuvenation and management of both the James Bond and Pink Panther franchises.  

Michael's journey takes an exciting new turn as he assumes the role of Managing Director/CEO at Rewilding America Now. This transition signifies his dedication to environmental conservation and rewilding initiatives. Michael now turns his attention towards the urgent need for environmental preservation and the protection of the remarkable animals that inhabit our world.

"Once I got to the Dakotas and met the independent ranchers and Native Americans, who I call stewards of the land, I was taken aback by their connection to the horses and the lands, and how they work together to save and propagate their lands, challenging the status quo. These ranchers and Native Americans along with these wild horses are American heroes to the lands, the environment and our future."

Beyond entertainment, Michael has a diverse management background from NBC Sports to CEO of The Comedy Store in Hollywood. Now, Michael wishes to translate and utilize all his skills to bring awareness to the urgent need for environmental preservation and the protection of the remarkable animals that inhabit our world. Michael's hope for the future "is that Rewilding America Now will demonstrate how to improve our lands for all species through Rewilding initiatives and with Wild Horses.”

Brian Mays

Jordan Whittaker
Ranch Advisor & Equine Expert

Jordan Whittaker was born and raised in the rural ranching community of Leadore, Idaho. He grew up on his family’s cattle ranch raising quality beef cattle and training horses. Following a two-year mission he served for his church in Kansas and Missouri, he studied corporate finance at Utah State University where he met and married his wife, Susan. Together they have 6 children, the youngest two being 9-month-old twin girls. Jordan has developed a successful irrigation business and two hydroelectric power plants in addition to managing the family ranch for the past 7 years. Jordan’s greatest accomplishment has been raising his family rooted in the same principles of hard work, respect, and stewardship that he learned in his youth. His dedication to conservation, humane cattle practices, and community has created a legacy for his family. His four oldest children have grown up on the back of a horse working alongside their father. He has instilled a love and passion for these animals in each of his kids and continues to nurture this love through his recent efforts in managing a wild horse herd in the Lemhi Valley. His efforts in this area has brought he and his family such joy and satisfaction this past year and he looks forward to further developing successful management practices for these beautiful animals in the future.
